On My Mind...

I was getting ready to head to church Sunday morning when my phone rang.  It was Bob Lowery calling to say, “I thought you might want to know what’s going on this morning…”  I still was not prepared for what I found when I arrived.  My first thought was, “The Lord is exceedingly kind.”  Long story short, what could have been a major disaster was instead a minor inconvenience.  This happened at 8:30 am, what if it had been 9:30 am?  What if it had fallen in any other direction?  No, this was the perfect time and the perfect direction.  Don Ramsey said, “The Lord is the best lumberjack.  No one else could have laid it down so perfectly.”  He’s right.  We’ve lost phone service, we have no internet, we lost power to the youth house but that’s it.  Services went on as plan, no interruption.  A Baptist Disaster Relief team is due in today to clear debris; Cox will be out Tuesday afternoon to repair phone and internet service.  All is good!  It has caused me to wonder, “How many things have happened over the years that have our God’s fingerprints all over it, but we didn’t notice?”  You know the old line, “If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a noise?”  Well, Bob was here and yes, it made a loud noise and the ground shook.  But what about the countless things the Lord has done, unnoticed by us?

It is easy to look at Sunday and say, “Boy, we got lucky there.”  “Isn’t it fortunate that no one was around?”  I prefer to think, “What an amazing demonstration of the providence of God.”  Providence, “inviable hand” of our God, was caring for us.  No, it wasn’t luck or fortune that smiled upon us, it was the grace of our God.  This is what it means to trust in a Sovereign God who rules over all things.  We can rest assured that He cares for us.  Thus, we cast our cares upon Him.  I suspect we would all be shocked to learn how many “near misses” we’ve experienced in our lives.  Not because “lady luck” smiled on us but because He neither slumbers nor sleeps.  He is always working, caring for His own.

Thank you Father, for this evidence of your grace and this reminder of your constant care.

I’ll see you Sunday.
