On My Mind...
November? Are you sure? Where has the time gone? I’ve known for a while now that time is speeding up, but this is ridiculous. At 66 I find myself regularly being corrected when I say, “You remember last year when…,” only to be told, “Pops, that was 5 years ago.” Knowing that November is here on Sunday, it’s time to begin planning for our 2027 budget. If you head a ministry or have responsibility for an area of ministry, it is time to begin submitting budget requests for the coming year. You can drop those off in the office on Sunday or Wednesday or email them to office@tbctulsa.org. We will see that those are given to the finance committee for consideration and recommendation through our 2027 proposed budget. Thank you for your input.
Let me bring you up to date on our deacon nomination process. We’ve approached those nominated and 4 have agreed to proceed. The next step will be deacon training in which we will discuss the biblical basis for deacon ministry, our church’s structure and how we function. This will be multi-session and involve both Bible study and discussion. After the training, those who wish to continue will be interviewed by our current deacons. Following the interviews, our deacons will meet and prayerfully consider who they would recommend we set aside for this work. Following a vote of the congregation, a day will be set for ordination of new deacons. This is a slow, deliberative process due to the importance of this office. Thank you for your continued prayers.
Finally, let me just remind you that our annual associational meeting will be this Sunday, November 1, at the Woodland Acres Baptist Church on South Harvard. The meeting begins at 5:00 PM. This is an opportunity, if you are interested, in seeing how we work together with other churches throughout the Tulsa Metro Area. We elected messengers to this meeting at our quarterly business meeting last week, but you do not have to be a messenger to attend. The guest speaker this year is Joe Ligon, Senior Associate Executive Director of our Oklahoma Baptist Convention. You are welcome to attend. Fair warning, this is a business meeting.
Then on November 9-10 will be the 120th Annual Meeting of our State Convention and it is in Tulsa as well. It will be at South Tulsa Baptist Church on South Sheridan Ave. The convention is only in Tulsa about every 5 or 6 years. This is an opportunity to hear first-hand about our State Convention and how we operate. Again, we’ve already elected messengers, but you do not have to be a messenger to attend. There will be reports from our state agencies, Baptist Homes for Children, Baptist Retirement Villages, Watersedge (Baptist Foundation of Oklahoma), and Oklahoma Baptist University. There will also be reports from all our state ministries. There will also be booths of various ministries in the exhibition area. It begins with the opening session on Monday evening at 6:30 PM, and then on Tuesday from 9:15 AM to 3:20 PM. Same warning as above. But it is a great opportunity if you’ve ever wondered, “What do Baptist do when they get together?”
I’m back in the office after a weekend off, thanks for that stack of cards on my desk. I appreciate brother Steve for filling in for me on Sunday morning and look forward to seeing you on Sunday!
Have a blessed week,
Rod
