On My Mind...
I don’t know about you but I’m going to be so happy when this election cycle is over! I’m so tired of political adds, emails, news stories with their hype, hyperbole and misinformation. By the way, the hype and misinformation are not one-sided. It’s coming from both parties. I’m tired of the rancor and vitriol. If I’m to believe what I’m hearing, our democracy is doomed whoever wins. Both sides are claiming if the other side wins, “It’s the end of democracy as we know it.” We have a great privilege and a responsibility next week. We have the honor of voting. I want to encourage you to take that responsibility seriously. I’m convinced it is your Christian duty to vote. You have the opportunity to impact the culture, to have a say in what happens in this country. You ought to use your voice. As the people of God, we must look carefully at candidates and parties, evaluate their positions and policies, and vote for the one that most closely advances truth, moral good and supports a biblical worldview. To look at it another way, vote for the one that does the least amount of harm toward the above.
To be honest, I’m not exactly thrilled with either choice this time around. Both are flawed. This has led to arguments around the question of voting for the lesser of two evils. There are those who say, “Can a Christian ever vote for evil?” My response is, “Have you ever voted?” We are always voting for the lesser to two evils in that no one is perfect. In my lifetime I’ve not had the opportunity to vote for anyone who didn’t have something in their character or political position, that was problematic. But I’m only 64, perhaps I’ve not lived long enough. While neither candidate stands where I do on the question of abortion, one is clearly well beyond where I’m and embraces the culture of death and so promotes abortion I cannot vote for them. While neither candidate stands where I do on the issues of LGBTQ+, one fully embraces the entire agenda and is thus a greater threat to religious freedom. For me, the question is not even close, but you must make up your mind on the issue, vote your God-informed conscience, and live with the consequences. Elections have consequences and thus this election, like all others, is important. Your vote matters. I’m convinced that it is our responsibility to vote, work and pray that our leaders allow us to live a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way (1 Timothy 2).
I believe it is your Christian duty to make your voice heard on election day, but our hope does not ride on an election. Nations rise and fall according to the will and purpose of our God. Our hope is in Christ.
Have a blessed week, and I’ll see you Sunday.
